The No Name Lane precinct may have bid farewell to its beloved live-fire cooking haven, Terra, but the team has seamlessly transitioned to a new corner location on Marcus Clarke Street, reigniting Canberra's love for charcoal-grilled delights.
The abrupt closure of Terra in May 2025 left many Canberrans in shock, especially those who adored Terra's unique smoky flavors. After seven years of building a loyal following, customers were given just days to savor their last meals before the unexpected shutdown.
Initially, social media hinted at a final farewell, with no word on a potential reopening. However, the dust hadn't even settled on their departure from No Name Lane when news broke of a new Terra location. By June 3, a remarkable transformation occurred, and the grill was back in action, now occupying the former Miss Van's space, a Vietnamese restaurant that had abruptly closed months prior.

Some might assume a sudden closure and reopening would hinder business, but Terra's resurgence sparked renewed national interest. Time Out's Best 8 Steaks of Canberra feature and a Good Food Guide shoutout caught the attention of Terra's owners, Sungyeol Son and Anthony Iannelli.
Six months later, Terra has found its footing in the new digs. The team praises the venue's flow, enhanced by its long, narrow dining room, a departure from the previous layout.
Upon my return, a sense of regret washed over me for the delayed visit. After experiencing the new outdoor dining on a warm summer evening, I can confirm Terra's newfound stability in its new spot.
Unfortunately, the original smoker couldn't accompany Terra due to kitchen space constraints, leading to the removal of beef brisket from the menu. This decision stirred debate among Terra enthusiasts, with some diners expressing disappointment on social media. Yet, the current menu's charcoal-grilled offerings, including Calula Creek lamb shoulder with toum and salsa verde, wood-fired glazed chashu pork belly, and whole rotisserie chicken, are truly remarkable. I challenge anyone to try the lamb and still crave the brisket.
The 'Feed Me' menu is a must-try, offering a $94 feast of grilled meats. The platter, part of this experience, showcases a variety of dishes, ensuring a generous portion and a leisurely dining pace without extending into the night.
Beyond the meat platter, the meal boasts standout dishes like the sweet-and-sour pork jowl, a flavor explosion with sticky, mouth-watering meat. The Basque cheesecake, a dense, smoky delight paired with a tart, sweet strawberry coulis, completes the culinary journey.
Terra's front-of-house team delivers an effortlessly cool yet attentive service, surpassing QR code ordering. Their friendly and accommodating nature makes each visit feel like a warm reunion with an old friend, eager to offer more drinks and meat.
Due to space constraints, Terra's extensive wine collection couldn't relocate to the new site, but some favorites have found a home at sister venue Outro in Braddon. The wine list remains impressive, featuring cult favorites like Adelaide Hills Ochota Barrels.
For those seeking a midday break, Terra offers a counter-service lunch called the 'Terra Bench,' allowing diners to customize proteins and sides, ideal for city workers needing a fast, reasonably priced meal.
It's a reminder that restaurants are fragile; they can disappear overnight, leaving no 'around the corner' backup. Terra's journey highlights the importance of cherishing these culinary experiences.
Terra is located at Unit 4/115 Marcus Clarke Street and welcomes diners for lunch from Monday to Friday and dinner every day of the week.
