Sweden's hockey team dominated the ice, cruising past Latvia with a 6-3 victory. Anton Frondell led the charge, scoring twice, and was tied for the tournament lead with five goals, matching Slovakia's Tomas Chrenko and the U.S.'s Will Zellers. "We came out strong and got an early lead, but we knew it wouldn't be easy," said Swedish captain Jack Berglund post-game. "They're a strong defensive team, and their power play is impressive. We handled it well, showing patience. It's great to secure the win, and we're two wins away from our goal."
The team's head coach, Magnus Havelid, echoed similar sentiments, "We're like underdogs, hungry for a win. We've won two golds, and it's time for the third. It doesn't matter who we face in the semis; we just need to focus on our game, relax, and seize the opportunity in the next 60 minutes."
Berglund, Sascha Boumedienne, and Felix Carell also found the back of the net for Sweden. This victory marks Sweden's third gold medal opportunity at the World Junior Championship, having previously won in 1981 and 2012. Last year, they finished fourth, and this year, they are the only team with a perfect record in regulation.
Latvia, on the other hand, has made the quarter-finals in four of the last five World Juniors, with Kristers Ansons, Karlis Flugins, and Olivers Murnieks scoring in this match. Despite their recent success, Latvia couldn't match Sweden's offensive prowess.
