According to Dr. Lin, the flu virus spreads through cough droplets and sneezes, potentially landing on your bedding. And, unfortunately, it can survive there for a surprisingly long time. "On bed sheets and pillowcases, the flu virus can live for a few hours up to 24 hours. With regards to mattresses and bed frames, it may last up to 48 hours," she explains. This means that if you're not careful, your bed could be re-exposing you to the virus, prolonging your illness.

But here's where it gets controversial... Dr. Lin points out that re-exposure to the virus can worsen your symptoms, especially at night. It's a vicious cycle!

Why does the virus last longer on some surfaces?

The materials your bedding is made of play a significant role. "Pillows and comforters are areas where breathing and sweating cause the retention of heat and moisture," Dr. Lin says. "It’s easier for viruses to survive in such environments. A cotton sheet will dry faster; therefore, the virus’s lifespan will reduce." Mattresses, being absorbent and rarely cleaned, can become reservoirs for these nasty microorganisms.

So, how often should you wash your bedding when you have the flu?

When you're sick, the last thing you want to do is laundry, but washing your bedding frequently is crucial. Dr. Lin recommends changing your bed sheets and pillowcases every one to two days. Use hot water and dry them thoroughly. Comforters should be washed at least once during your illness or covered with a washable cover. This helps limit your exposure and prevents re-infections.

And this is the part most people miss... Dr. Lin notes that her patients often sleep better after following these cleaning guidelines.

How to Sleep Better When You Have the Flu

Dr. Lin also suggests these tips to improve your sleep while battling the flu:

  • Sleep with your head elevated.
  • Use saline nasal spray.
  • Hydrate by drinking fluids.
  • Manage your fever.
  • Keep your bedding clean.
  • Maintain a comfortable room climate.

"Sleeping helps to fight off the infection in the body. Sleeping poorly will slow the healing process."
