Timberwolves star Edwards deals Mavericks their worst slump in decades
Fresh from claiming the MVP title at the All-Star Game in Los Angeles, Edwards led the Timberwolves to a commanding 122-111 victory over the Mavericks, who suffered their 10th straight loss. With 14 points in the final quarter, Edwards showcased his clutch gene, a stark contrast to the Mavericks' struggles in clutch situations last season.
The Mavericks, down by 18 points in the second quarter, mounted an impressive comeback, only to fall short. Edwards' performance, including six rebounds and 22 points by Rudy Gobert, sealed the deal for the Timberwolves, who now sit fifth in the Western Conference.
For the Mavericks, the loss means they remain in 12th place in the Western Conference, well out of playoff contention. Their rookie sensation, Cooper Flagg, was sidelined with a foot injury.
Elsewhere, the Oklahoma City Thunder rebounded strongly from the All-Star break, defeating the Brooklyn Nets 105-86. Despite being without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams, the Thunder's top-notch defense and depth proved too much for the Nets.
Jared McCain, acquired from the Philadelphia 76ers, led the Thunder with 21 points, praising the team's 'chemistry'.
LA Derby
The Cleveland Cavaliers extended their winning streak to seven games, beating the Charlotte Hornets 118-113. The Cavaliers' hot streak, shared with the Golden State Warriors, has been fueled by the acquisition of James Harden, who scored 18 points.
In a thrilling LA derby, the Los Angeles Lakers edged out the Clippers 125-122. Luka Doncic and LeBron James combined for 44 points, while Nikola Jokic dominated with 32 points, leading the Denver Nuggets to a 157-103 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, the second-largest margin in Nuggets history.
