A bold move is set to shake up the world of swimming, and it's causing quite a stir! Get ready for a fascinating insight into the future of international swimming training.
In a recent podcast interview, USA Swimming CEO Kevin Ring dropped a major announcement: starting in 2028, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) will no longer welcome international athletes at their prestigious training facilities, including the iconic USOTC in Colorado Springs.
This revelation comes amidst growing discussions about the global swimming landscape, where it seems the rest of the world is rapidly catching up to the American dominance. Yet, many of the world's top swimmers, including the current stars Summer McIntosh and Leon Marchand, have been training with American coaches, often within the NCAA system.
But here's where it gets controversial: these international swimmers, despite training in the US, have been outperforming their American counterparts on the global stage. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Marchand, a French swimmer, took home four individual gold medals, while the American men managed just one. McIntosh, representing Canada, also trained in the US and won three individual golds, more than any other female swimmer.
SwimSwam's analysis of the data post-Paris Olympics revealed an interesting trend. Out of the 219 medals awarded in the pool, only 14 went to international athletes training in the US, and these were spread across just six swimmers.
The debate intensified after the 2025 World Championships, where American swimmers struggled to keep up with their international peers. SwimSwam's deeper dive into the data showed that six non-American men training in the US won individual medals in Singapore, with four more relay swimmers meeting the same criteria. On the women's side, only two non-American athletes training in the US won medals, with McIntosh spending most of 2025 in France.
Editor-in-Chief Braden Keith brought up this conversation with Ring, specifically highlighting McIntosh and Marchand. Ring, while not sharing his personal opinion, emphasized the importance of training American athletes, stating that they benefit from daily competition with the world's best.
And this is the part most people miss: Ring revealed that the USOPC has a policy, effective from 2028, allowing only American athletes to train at USOPC facilities. This policy, though not yet reflected on the current USOPC website, requires international guests to receive approval from their sport's National Governing Body.
The timing of this announcement is intriguing, coming just weeks after a Texas training group, including international athletes like Hubert Kos, McIntosh, and Marchand, completed a training camp in Colorado Springs. Many college teams also regularly travel to these facilities, and this new restriction will undoubtedly complicate their training plans.
